ZHang YuPeng (ORIEL COLLEGE, 2017 - 2018)
More than ten years of study and practice in law bestowed me not only academic and professional skills but also rational and logical ways of thinking and problem solving. Upon my graduation from China University of Political Science and Law in 2012, I practiced as a litigation lawyer in a prestigious PRC law firm for three years, which gave me ample opportunities to use the legal theories and methodologies taught at law school. In 2015, I joined in the China Life Asset Management Company Limited, where I could have access to the up-to-date financial practice as well as a full view of commercial operations.
However, intensive work on risk management soon presented me with a great sense of challenge: though being professional in law, I am absolutely a freshman in financial statements, valuation and capital asset pricing etc. I need to undertake a systematical study of this area, rather than simply have a daily acquisition of knowledge fragment in practice. Fortunately, the MSc in Law and Finance (MLF) is just like a customized course for me, perfectly aligned with my present needs and interdisciplinary backgrounds.
After graduation from the UK, I want to join an MNC in China to work as an in-house counselor. Law embodies my attitudes towards life and my way of solving problems. I tend to believe the most ideal state of suit is no suit, especially when I observed previously what a corporation had suffered due to insufficient legal support and risk management in its involvement of commercial dispute. With a big heart always being curious and ready to learn, I am convinced that I would understand more the value and guardian role of corporate lawyers through my learning for the MLF course.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the trustees of the David and Jayne Paterson Scholarship. This honor means so much to me: not only addressing my financial issues, but also enabling me to build up networks with the outstanding scholars of this Scholarship. As a new member of the University of Oxford, I will make the best of the resources and be dedicated to the progression of my vocational skills.
