The Prospectus
Introduction
The David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust is a UK-registered charitable foundation which, in its discretion, awards scholarships to students to enable them to attend educational establishments in the United Kingdom. This prospectus relates specifically to Scholarships which will be awarded to graduates of the China University of Political Science and Law to study for one of the following courses at the University of Oxford: MJur, BA in Jurisprudence, MSc in Law and Finance, MPhil in Law or DPhil in Law.
Eligibility
Applicants must be under 30 years of age at the date of entry to the University of Oxford and must:
Tenure
The Scholarship is for a period of one year or such longer period as the Trustees may decide and is tenable for one of the following courses at the University of Oxford: MJur, BA in Jurisprudence, MSc in Law and Finance, MPhil in Law or DPhil in Law. Currently, the Trustees expect to award two scholarships each year.
Value of the Scholarship
Method of Application
Applicants should apply for a place at the University of Oxford through the normal admission process. Courses and their respective application deadlines can be found at: https://www.law.ox.ac.uk/.
Condition
The award of a Scholarship is conditional upon the candidate being accepted for and taking up a place at the University of Oxford.
Regulations Governing Scholarships
Insurance
All insurance will be the responsibility and for the account of the Scholar concerned, but it is recommended that Scholars should consider accident, medical and personal effects insurance and/or any other insurance which they may themselves consider to be appropriate.
Definitions
The expressions used above shall have the following meanings:
“Scholar(s)”
means a candidate or candidates chosen by the Trustees for the award of a Scholarship or Scholarships
“Scholarship(s)”
means a scholarship or scholarships awarded to a Scholar or Scholars pursuant to a Deed of Trust dated December 1998 and any amendments thereto
“The Trustees”
means those persons nominated in the Trust Deed, and their successors
“Trust Deed”
means a Deed made in December 1998 between David Paterson and the Trustees establishing The David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust in the U.K. (Registered Charity Number 1076792).

- be graduates of the China University of Political Science and Law (“CUPL”);
- have been accepted for entry to one of the following courses at the University of Oxford: MJur, BA in Jurisprudence, MSc in Law and Finance, MPhil in Law or DPhil in Law;
- be resident outside the European Economic Area (EEA), and have completed the majority of their formal education in the People’s Republic of China;
- be graduates of not more than four years standing who intend to return to the People’s Republic of China to pursue a career in the legal profession; and
- be in a satisfactory state of health.

Value of the Scholarship
- Each Scholarship is of the value of £15,000.
- In addition, each Scholarship will be matched with a £10,000 supplement from the Law Faculty of the University of Oxford, thus bringing the value of the Scholarship up to £25,000.

Regulations Governing Scholarships
- Scholars must conduct themselves in a proper manner throughout the periods for which the Scholarships are awarded and must use their utmost endeavours to complete their studies and achieve the best possible results in any tests or examinations which are part of the course.
- The Scholarships will only be awarded to students undertaking one of the following courses at the University of Oxford: MJur, BA in Jurisprudence, MSc in Law and Finance, MPhil in Law or DPhil in Law.
- Scholars must at all times comply with the regulations of the University of Oxford.
- Scholars shall not accept, without the consent of the Trustees, any employment during their Scholarship periods other than short-term employment during vacations.
- Scholars shall not, without the consent of the Trustees, be attached to the Embassy or other diplomatic or governmental office in the United Kingdom or elsewhere during the tenure of the Scholarships.
- Scholars must notify the Trust by email if they are awarded other funding that is to be used towards the same costs as this Scholarship offers.
- The Trustees reserve the right to terminate the Scholarship at any time for reasons of unsatisfactory conduct, breaches of Oxford University regulations, breaches of the regulations of the award, failure to make satisfactory progress, illness, or conviction for any criminal offence on the part of the Scholar.
- The Trustees reserve the right to terminate or amend the terms of the Scholarship for any reasons which they think fit without having to account therefor.
