ZHANG YIZHUO (MAASTRICHT UNIVERSITY, 2015 - 2016)
“Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anyone expects of you. Never excuse yourself”—Henry Ward Beecher. I have always known I could do more than anyone else possible, and I have consistently proved myself to be more than they bargained for. I love a challenge, and do not let even a hint of an opportunity go unclaimed.
My ambition to read law can be traced back to my childhood as I sat watching lawyers helping people in need. The image of a client smiling at their lawyer’s hard work is imprinted in my mind. The thirst to help people further stems my desire to read law. To me, law is about helping people in need whether serving justice in a court room or as simple as simple as helping someone deal with family disputes.
As a socially responsible person, I believe social equality and justice are the primary values that transcend any social system. Through my undergraduate study at China University of Political Science and Law, the best law school in China, I underwent a systematic and rigorous legal training which not only enabled me to develop a comprehensive understanding of my specialty and but reinforced my convictions concerning the spirit of law. Netherlands, the birthplace of international law and sit on international court of justice, is Mekka of international law. And when I was a law student in China University of Political Science and Law, I had a strong desire to go to Netherlands to further my study and to feel the atmosphere law study here.
Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Paterson, The David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust offered me a scholarship to let my dream come true. Now, I am siting here in Netherlands to write this essay with gratitude. I will try my best to study hard and in the future, if possible, I will help those law students who have a dream to realize their own dream. Thanks again!
