YAO DONGGUI, VICKY (ORIEL COLLEGE, 2006 - 2009)
My name is Donggui Yao (Vicky Yao) and my fascinating hometown is Fuzhou, a beautiful coastal city lying beside the Taiwan Strait, in Fujian Province, P.R.China. I entered China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) in the year of 2002, and was selected as the 2006 Paterson Scholar by The David and Jayne Paterson Education Trust upon my graduation, to read for a B.A. in Legal Jurisprudence at Oriel School, in the University of Oxford.
Harbor my motherland
Born in a country with five thousand years' glorious history, I have always harbored the deepest affection for my dear motherland and constantly take pride in her diversified culture that second to none. However, as a transitional country, the idea of rule of law has never really taken root in the minds of Chinese people, constituting a sharp contrast with western countries. As we know, the protection from law is critical to every citizen in this nation, and rule of law can help achieve the social values such as equality, justice and order treasured by the whole human kind. As a girl brought up in the prosperous coastal city of eastern China, I have strongly sensed the urgent need of legal protection in the current background of the day by day economic booming in China, for the interests of both individuals and enterprises. The pursuit of law is essential for a modern country because of its alluring potential to benefit so many, to promote the welfare of the community and to provide equal opportunity for every individual. And that is the very reason I choose the major of law for four years in the prestigious legal educational establishment, China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), to pursue the ultimate goal shared by people all over the world !
View the whole world
Great Britain is a country with a fine common law tradition, and Oxford University is famous for its first-rate legal education. The unique tutorial system, which is the very essence of legal education in Oxford, will give us intensive training in the art of argument. The affluent academic resources both online and in the library, will undoubtedly give us an edge for the hard work in the vast ocean of legal knowledge. And the lectures of world renowned legal scholars will instill in us the true meaning of law. As the most highly regarded undergraduate law degree in the UK, the BA degree in law will fully qualify us as lawyers in the basic skills such as independent research, analytical ability and legal argument, which is invaluable both inside and outside the field of law. Being blessed with the golden opportunity to further my legal education in such an un-matched environment, the only thing that I can do is: to try my best and to achieve the most!
I have a dream
Where there is a will, there is a way! With the generous financial support from the David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust today, I sincerely hope that one day I can learn from the insightful deeds of the Trust and make my own contribution to the welfare of my country, the People's Republic of China!
