YAN JIAXIN (REGENT'S PARK COLLEGE, 2014 - 2015)

My interest in law began during my senior high school years when I read Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, in which the book’s hero, lawyer Atticus Finch, honorably defends the life of an innocent black man who is unjustly targeted by his neighbors due to his race and skin color. Since then, I have been attracted to the legal profession by its core essence: ensuring the truth is heard and that decency is defended. As the time has come to decide upon a course of study, law is truly the way forward for me.
To promote China’s development of its legal system, it is imperative to learn advanced knowledge of jurisprudence from western countries and to assimilate useful experiences from western legal systems. As the home to the common law system and to modern capitalism, the UK is reputed for its time-honored legal system and for its unparalleled research in jurisprudence, with a wealth of in-depth literature and data collection. My wish is to grasp the essence of British judicial system and apply my acquired knowledge to the judicial reform in China. University of Oxford is a distinguished university in the UK, and more importantly, Law programme in the university is uniquely situated in a variety of ways to offer me an exceptionally rewarding educational experience. The principal reason for my desire to study here is the quality of teaching here and particularly in my chosen subject -- Law. I also find exciting the prospect of joining a university here with international flavors and exceptional research facilities.
Thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Paterson, I was granted the support from The David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust. With this kind help, I am able to concentrate on my academy and make greater contribution to law education in my country. Strongly motivated by the altruism Mr. and Mrs. Paterson have shown, I am keen to offer some assistance to potential students in the future if possible. Thank you very much!
