XU TINGYU (HERTFORD COLLEGE 2022 - 2023)
My main research interests include applied ethics, moral philosophy, political philosophy, and metaphysics, especially theories of action, rationality, normativity, reasons, and moral responsibility. These interests come from my education and experiences in research. When I studied law and legal theory at college, I found that a number of practices and concepts in society are significant for us: promises, vows, authority, consent, and so on. Yet their significance is not just at the practical level, but at the philosophical level as well. This relationship between intention, consent, and duty could be an ethical question; or a question in moral and legal theory; it might even relate to the philosophy of language.
That is why I want to pursue a postgraduate degree in philosophy and law. I hope to have a better understanding of fundamental philosophical conceptions, and also of some important practices in human society. I want to prepare myself for a Ph.D. program by training critical and creative thinking, and excellent reading, writing, and communication skills through studying. By going from general philosophical considerations to abundant data of practices, I hope one day I could make unique contributions in this field.
Oxford is always my dream place to further my study, not only for its fame and history, but also for its long tradition to focus on interdisciplinary research between law, ethical theory and political philosophy. The law department at Oxford University is prestigious with strong faculty and a dynamic community. I am so honored to be offered a place in the MPhil program at Oxford University.
Nevertheless, pursuing a degree abroad needs a lot of financial support. I felt a lot relieved when I knew I could apply for the David and Jayne Paterson Scholarship. I really appreciate the generosity and kindness of Mr. and Mrs. Paterson to establish this Trust and give me a scholarship with a considerable amount. Without their help, hardly could my family afford the tuition and fees and other living expenses to study at Oxford University. I will endeavour to contribute to my own research field to pay back their support.
