TANG ANQI (MANSFIELD COLLEGE, 2014 - 2015)

Tang Anqi
Six years ago, I entered China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) and started my study in this most prestigious law school in China. I was double-majored in Law and German during my five years in CUPL. Because China itself has a civil law system and large scale reception of German law, so I have planned to devote myself into study of the rigorous civil law in Germany ever since my freshman year.

However, my time as a graduate student in College of Comparative Law in CUPL last year has changed my view. The comparative perspective tells me that focusing only on domestic law and German civil law system is no longer sufficient. I have already learned a lot about civil law system, especially during my time as an exchange student at University of Cologne. But in order to further my knowledge in law, to better understand our own domestic law and to find out more worth learning foreign legal systems, to comprehensively and thoroughly study the legal spirit and the legal system of common law is essential and vital. Therefore, the more I learn, the more firmly I believe that I must free myself from the old patterns and see for myself how the legal system in a common law country functions. Since Britain is well-known for its most influential common law system throughout the world, it undoubtedly became the most ideal place for my pursuit of in-depth knowledge of common law.

But no matter where to pursue further education, applying the advanced theories of various foreign legal systems to improve our motherland’s legal system is the ultimate goal. And I wish to contribute my knowledge and expertise to the construction of China’s forthcoming legal civilization, so I really wish that I could make every endeavor to grasp as much knowledge as possible to achieve my goal in the limited time at Oxford, the most renowned University among the world.

Above all, it is my great honor to receive the generous financial support from The David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust and I am deeply grateful for that. Here, I sincerely express my thankful feelings to Mr. and Mrs. Paterson and anyone else who has offered me his or her selfless help on my way to Oxford. With all the kind help I will further my academic journey and achieve the goal.
