SUN SHASHA (ST. ANNE'S COLLEGE, 2019 - 2020)
I have always been passionate about academic research and I am fascinated by the beauty of philosophy of law which is the field I am majoring in. I am honored to be offered a place for MPhil at Oxford University this year, which is a precious opportunity and an enormous challenge for me as well. Legal philosophy normally focuses on the study of the fundamental theory of Law and adopts an analytical philosophical research, the main methods of which are to distinguish among a series of concepts and then to defend researchers’ position and criticise existing arguments conflicting with their position.
My major involves in-depth analysis and discussion of some basic themes related to Law, such as rights, obligations, the rule of law and so on. The solution of these problems is of great significance to the advance of legal theory and even legal practice. More importantly, these researches are related to human life and crucial to enhance human wellbeing. Oxford has a deep tradition of legal philosophy and has plenty of excellent legal philosophers who make great and lasting contributions to this field. I strongly believe that studying at Oxford University will open a new world for me.
However, studying abroad definitely needs financial support. The tuition fees and living expenses in Oxford come at a huge cost for my family and the scholarship has undoubtedly relieved the financial burden for my family. Thanks to the generous support from the David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust, I am able to continue to pursue my dreams at Oxford. I sincerely express my thankful feelings to Mr. and Mrs. Paterson. I will spare no effort to further my academic journey and make full use of the scholarship to make more contributions to the study of Law.
