MENG MEITONG, MAVIS (ST. CROSS COLLEGE, 2016 - 2017)
At the very beginning of my undergraduate study, I found myself extremely fascinated by civil procedure law and easily topped in the course among my peers. But the idea to go further in this field in Oxford has not started until I had the opportunity to attend a lecture delivered by a renowned professor from Oxford. During the lecture named “the delivery of civil justice”, I was first enlightened by English Civil Procedure Law, by its tight logic and well-designed theory frames. For a long time China has been heavily influenced by US law, to the exclusion of other common law jurisdictions, yet I believe that English law deserves much more attention than what it currently receives in China, which is the driving force behind my desire for studying English law.
After I set up the goal to enter Oxford, it became a spiritual pillar to me. I cannot remember how many times when I felt exhausted and closely gave up due to the heavy workload and pressure from my graduate study, I would always get into the school library, walk directly to those bookshelves full of law reference books published by Oxford University Press, sit on the floor bending my knees, and just let my thoughts flying around those books, trying to experience the aroma of my dream school. I gazed at those books row by row, telling myself deep in my heart - hold on, hold on, just imaging how thrilling it would be if you can enter Oxford, study under the guide of those extraordinary minds, and appreciate the unparalleled charming atmosphere there. Every time after those moments, all problems were not problems anymore, and I felt refreshed and energised to confront all the challenges in my study again.
What is always true is, you will never get a too bad result when you really fight for what you want. After all those days, I eventually received the offer from Oxford, and all my efforts paid off. However, one can never easily achieve his or her goals without the support from others, and the same rule works for me. I want to show my gratitude to the Trust, for its kind and generous support, with which I can eventually make my academic dream in Oxford come true. It is truly an honour to be a part of the Trust’s scholar community.
