LI XIANSHU ( ST. HILDA'S COLLEGE 2023 - 2024)

I have always strived to lend a helping hand to those in need, as the sense of fulfilment that comes from giving and caring is truly invaluable and incomparable. Whether it is donating my long hair to cancer patients, accompanying children with autism in their rehabilitation training, or providing legal aid to those entangled in disputes to seek fairness and justice, I always do my best to make a difference. My initial desire to help inspired my pursuit of a law career. As a child, I would often see an elderly woman scavenging on my way home. She told me her house had been forcibly demolished, leaving her no choice but to scavenge for a living. At that moment, I longed to advocate for her just as lawyers do in television dramas. This experience was pivotal in inspiring my desire to study law, and I'm grateful for making that choice as it has enabled me to assist more people effectively.
While I possess ambitious goals and strive for excellence, I also have the resilience and perseverance to accomplish them. I am deeply grateful to the China University of Political Science and Law and Tsinghua University for providing me with excellent educational resources and valuable practical opportunities. Past experiences have strengthened my passion for international arbitration and dispute resolution. Delving into this field has not only reinforced my legal awareness but also emphasised the necessity of being a compassionate and empathetic legal professional. Fortunate to have received the education and experiences that have empowered me with the courage and ability to tackle challenges, I am both grateful and acutely aware of the accompanying responsibilities—speaking up for marginalised communities and disadvantaged groups.
I am eagerly looking forward to immersing myself fully in my studies at the University of Oxford, integrating academic knowledge with practical applications. Through exposure to different legal jurisdictions, I aim for a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of international arbitration and dispute resolution, striving to become an outstanding legal professional in this field.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Paterson for their generosity, which has provided me with the invaluable opportunity to realise my academic aspirations at Oxford. Being awarded the David and Jayne Paterson Scholarship is more than just an unparalleled honour to me, it also represents a profound mission to pass on this enormous goodwill of helping others and contributing to society. I will forever treasure the initial impulse that drove me to study law—an urge rooted in my desire to assist that elderly scavenger. With a heart dedicated to benevolence and a mind sharpened by rigorous thought, I am committed to extending my helping hand on an even broader scale.
