LI SHIYI (LINACRE COLLEGE 2020 - 2021)
My childhood image of my mother never fades in my memory. It was her, after a hectic day of work, self-learning family law when she was divorcing with my father. Although I was too young to understand how the legal system worked at that time, I was relieved that law resolved my parents’ constant wrangles and felt the sacredness and power of law till now.
Coming from a rural milieu, I am aware of how the confined conditions of distant areas inhibit promising businesses and exacerbate isolation and stagnation in economy. While I was studying in Beijing, a vigorous city where economics prospers, I deeply felt the significance of the development of commerce and innovation to the improvement of people’s life, and a fertile and stable environment safeguarded by law is the key to boost economics. Therefore, I decided to devote my career to the field of commercial law and economic law.
I started to plan for studying abroad after my participation in the exchange program at the University of California, Berkeley, where I got to know the common law system for the first time. I was immediately attracted by its differences from the civil law system. I also intensely enjoyed the challenges and opportunities of studying abroad. Hence, I wish to pursue further studies in the UK, where there is a prestigious tradition of legal education and commercial and economic law.
This year, I am lucky enough to be admitted into the Magister Juris program at the University of Oxford. Also, I feel honored to be awarded this scholarship by the David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Paterson’s generosity, I am able to enjoy my student life at Oxford with a much lighter financial burden. In the long run, my goal is to be a commercial lawyer. I will make good use of this scholarship and the time at Oxford and realize my life ambition step by step.
