HU BOXIANG ( LADY MARGARET HALL 2023 - 2024)
During my undergraduate years at CUPL, intensive courses on domestic and international law filled my academic calendar. While keeping performing excellently in the courses, I dedicated myself to some in-depth research that bolstered my understanding of various legal questions, from domestic law issues such as anti-monopoly regulation, to international law topics like regulation of polar regions and the negotiation of the Ramsar Convention. Outside of classes, I also honed my abilities in legal interpretation and application and independent research by doing internships.
Through my internships and coursework, I gradually discovered that international law is where my interest lies and where my capacity is: I enjoyed exploring various sources of international law knowledge in my extra-curricular time; I served as a teaching assistant for an international law course; I was even once invited to give a lecture on international negotiations and rules of procedure to a group of students from different universities all over China, during my internship at the WWF. Now, as I step towards legal studies at a more advanced level, I am certain that I will pursue a career in international law.
My goal for the MJur programme is to find answers to complex and practical questions in international law. To be more specific, my recent interest lies in a range of international law issues related to the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict. It is my aim during the MJur degree to gain insight into the strengths and flaws of international law in various aspects of international law relevant to this conflict, to analyse some of them and to contribute my insights to the legal discussions. Upon completion of my MJur studies, I intend to continue my Ph.D. studies in international law. After years of accumulating experience, my hope is to engage in the law-making and law-applying process in some capacities as a scholar.
I am deeply honored to receive this scholarship and wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Paterson, the Trust, and all associated individuals for their generous support. This scholarship represents not only financial assistance but also underscores the significant responsibility I now carry. Motivated by this scholarship, I am committed to diligently pursuing knowledge, ensuring that my work will benefit the progress of international law and the international community. Ultimately, I aspire to play a role in shaping a world that is more just, peaceful, and prosperous.
