YU XIAYU (ST. HILDA’S COLLEGE 2026 - 2027)

Intellectual property law fascinates me because technological progress rarely affects every country in the same way. A legal framework that encourages innovation in one economy may create very different challenges in another, particularly when countries are at different stages of technological development. This has led me to become increasingly interested in how intellectual property law can respond to new technologies while remaining sensitive to different economic and social contexts. More broadly, I hope to explore how the law can encourage innovation without losing sight of the wider interests that innovation is ultimately meant to serve.
At Oxford, I look forward to developing this interest in an intellectually diverse environment where legal questions can be examined across jurisdictions and traditions. In particular, I hope to understand how different countries respond to similar technological challenges through their own intellectual property frameworks, and what these differences reveal about the values and assumptions underlying their laws. The MJur programme will therefore be an important opportunity for me not simply to acquire further legal knowledge, but to learn to approach intellectual property questions from a more comparative and critical perspective.
Receiving the David and Jayne Paterson Scholarship is both an honour and a source of encouragement as I begin this next stage of my studies. I am sincerely grateful to Mr and Mrs Paterson and the Trust for their generous support. I am also honoured to become a member of the Paterson community, while this support will allow me to devote myself more fully to exploring these questions at Oxford. I hope that the knowledge and perspectives I gain there will continue to shape both my future research and my work in intellectual property law. Having benefited from the support and encouragement of the Trust and its staff, I hope to carry this spirit forward by encouraging more students from CUPL to pursue international opportunities and engage with the wider world.
