XU YI ( ST. CATHERINE'S COLLEGE 2024 - 2025)
Born and raised in the coastal province of Zhejiang, I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of international trade on regional economies. This early exposure to global commerce has profoundly shaped my academic interests and career aspirations. My formative years, steeped in the dynamic atmosphere of economic growth and cross-border transactions, instilled in me a deep-seated passion for international commercial law and a commitment to fostering global economic cooperation.
My academic journey at the China University of Political Science and Law has been instrumental in cultivating a robust foundation in legal theory and practice. Under the guidance of esteemed professors, I have explored diverse areas of law while simultaneously drawing insights from philosophy and history to enrich my legal perspective. Through collaborative projects with peers, I have tackled complex, real-world legal challenges, honing my analytical and problem-solving skills. My independent research has focused on intricate aspects of commercial law, including an in-depth analysis of the historical development of standby letters of credit in the United States and a critical examination of advising banks' liability in commercial letters of credit. This comprehensive education has not only shaped my legal worldview but also inspired my ambition to contribute meaningfully to China's ongoing globalisation efforts through rigorous academic research.
The prospect of pursuing a world-class common law education at the University of Oxford fills me with excitement and anticipation. This unparalleled opportunity promises to expose me to a rich tapestry of legal traditions and jurisprudence widely applied in international commercial practice. I am eager to broaden my academic horizons, engage with diverse legal perspectives, and cultivate a more nuanced understanding of global legal systems. I envision this experience as a transformative chapter in my academic journey, one that will enable me to appreciate and critically engage with the innovative contributions of legal scholars worldwide, transcending the boundaries of my current legal education.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. and Ms. Paterson for their extraordinary generosity. Their support is invaluable, allowing me to fully immerse myself in my intellectual pursuits at Oxford without the burden of financial constraints. Inspired by their magnanimity, I am resolute in my commitment to excel in my academic endeavours, particularly in the field of international commercial law. I aspire to produce scholarly work of a higher caliber, contributing meaningful insights to this dynamic area of legal study. Furthermore, I am dedicated to fostering a culture of academic exchange and support. It is my goal to encourage and assist fellow students passionate about legal scholarship to broaden their horizons through international study, thereby perpetuating the cycle of knowledge sharing and cross-cultural legal understanding. In this way, I hope to honour the Patersons' generosity by extending its impact to future generations.
