REN XIAONAN ( ST. ANNE'S COLLEGE 2024 - 2025)
During my academic years in China University of Political Science and Law, I was fascinated by Corporate Insolvency Law, Corporate Finance Law, and Financial Economics, which provide me with a deeper understanding of the synergy between these subjects. Through winning numerous academic prizes, I developed a genuine fascination with financial law which I view as a melting pot of various legal, economic, and mathematical concepts which supplement and enhance each other.
However, I also gained insights into how many important goals of market efficiency, creditor protection, and efficient allocation risks under China’s financial law regime could often be undermined by strategic behaviour of the part of more sophisticated parties.
In the coming years, such shortcomings will pose significant risks to Chinese lenders financing infrastructural projects throughout the world and increase the need for well-rounded financial law experts. I believe that my education at Oxford, coupled with my strong Chinese Law background, will supply me with the technical and cultural understandings necessary to provide insightful solutions to clients from various jurisdictions.
That is why I want to express my deepest gratitude for awarding me the David and Jayne Paterson Scholarship. It is an incredible honour to be selected as a recipient, and I am truly thankful for Mr. Paterson and Mrs. Paterson’s generosity and support. This scholarship will significantly ease my financial burden, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on financial concerns. I also promise to make the most of this opportunity and give back to the society in the future, just as Mr. Paterson and Mrs. Paterson have done for me and countless others.
