LI RUIXUAN (UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, 2014 - 2015)
As a 24-year-old young man who should have already made some material contribution to his family according to traditional values of China, I don’t want to use the name of realizing my own dream to add much burden to my parents. Therefore, I am really grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Paterson for their “extra” generosity.
In fact, my application for the scholarship was late because I hadn’t known that the scholarship is also available to applicants with conditional offer. I didn’t submit my application until I met the requirement of IELTS in mid-July and by that time we have already got three candidates in my university eligible for the scholarship. I was a little bit frustrated because I knew that I was too late and students from my university could only get three places from Mr. and Mrs. Paterson. However, several days later, Ms. Wong told me that my application was successful which really made me overjoyed.
To be frank, the former education I received was mainly related to continental law. However, based on my recent theoretical study and practical experiences, I realized that obtaining comparative perspective and thinking mode of common law through professional academic training in the UK will be quite valuable and meaningful for me. During my internship I found that only relying on civil law instruments --- theory of legal transactions and system of claims, could not handle all the complicated problems in reality, especially when new circumstances not pre-specified in statutory code emerge. Thus I intend to turn to taking the practical spirits of common law for references before canoeing further in civil law.
With the kind help from Mr. and Mrs. Paterson, I do feel more confident to conquer the difficulties in my coming Oxford life and I will try my best to learn. Above all, thanks very much!
