The David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust is now seeking applications from graduates who wish to study law at Oriel College, Oxford University for the academic year commencing in 2009.

Criteria for Selection:

We are seeking students who can show an excellent academic performance combined with the personal qualities and character which demonstrate leadership and fellowship. We may also take into consideration achievements in non-curricular activities and their level of community involvement.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit, through the Nominating Committee, evidence of their capacity to undertake the course of study. A fluent command of the English language (both written and spoken) is absolutely essential. It is mandatory for the candidates to have either an acceptable TOEFL or IELTS qualification, i.e.

- TOEFL -
paper based: overall score of 600, with a Test of Written English score of 5.5 or
computer based: overall score of 250, with Test of Written English score of 5.5 or
internet based: overall score of 100

- IELTS -
overall score of 7.0 (with at least 7.0 in each of the four components)

It is expected that two Scholarships will be awarded and each Scholarship will be:

tenable at Oriel College at Oxford for a degree course in law;
for a period of 3 years;

paid directly to Oriel College towards the total College and University fees, which are currently approximately £16,000 per annum. Other costs will be for the student's own account. These are estimated to be about £8,000 - £10,000 per annum depending upon the individual's own expenses.); and

conditional upon the candidates being accepted for and taking up a place at Oriel, with the College itself having absolute discretion in the acceptance of candidates.

 

Applicants must be:

under 30 years of age and in a satisfactory state of health;
resident in the People's Republic of China;
graduates of the China University of Political Science and Law ("CUPL");
fluent in the English language.

 

Method of Application:

1. 2. Applications must be received by the Trustees not later than 1 September 2008.
3. Applications must be submitted through the Nominating Committee of the CUPL and be supported by a testimonial signed by the Chairman of the Nominating Committee setting out:
the applicant's academic record of examination results;
remarks which will assist the Trustees to satisfy themselves that requirements as to special qualities have been met;
any other relevant information which assist the Trustees in their assessment.
4. Shortlisted candidates must apply separately for admission to the University. They must submit an application, identifying Oriel as their preferred College, to the Oxford Colleges Admissions Office by 20 September 2008. They must also apply via Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). 5. Shortlisted applicants will be required to submit evidence of their capability to undertake the course of study in law and will be screened by the Trustees whose decision will be final.
6. The final selection will require applicants to attend for a personal interview before 15 November 2008. Any applicant who has not been invited for an interview before that date should consider the application unsuccessful.

1. Applicants should be under 30, with a degree from the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing, the People's Republic of China, and have received all their previous education in the People's Republic of China.
