The David and Jayne Paterson Scholarship
Tenable at Oriel College, University of Oxford

Two scholarships for postgraduate students tenable at Oriel College, Oxford, have been established under The David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust. The following regulations will apply to these scholarships:

REGULATIONS

Each scholarship will be known as The David and Jayne Paterson Scholarship, and will be awarded annually.
Each scholarship will be tenable for three years subject to satisfactory academic progress, and will be paid directly to Oriel College towards the total College and University fees, which are currently approximately £16,000 per annum. Other costs will be for the student's own account. These are estimated to be about £8,000 - £10,000 per annum depending upon the individual's own expenses. Free air passages to and from London are provided directly to the student at the beginning and at the end of the period of tenure..
Each scholar will reside in Oxford throughout each academic year.
The scholarships will be awarded to an ethnic Chinese who have completed the majority of their formal education in the People's Republic of China, and who have graduated from the China University of Political Science and Law. Applicants should normally be graduates of not more than four years standing who intend to return to the People's Republic of China to pursue a career in the legal profession. Undergraduates in their final year and sitting for their degree may also apply.
The scholarships will be awarded to students who wish to read for a degree in Law.
The successful candidates, provided they have been accepted for admission to the University of Oxford, will become Junior Members of Oriel College, Oxford.
If no candidates are judged to be of sufficient merit, no award will be made.


ADMINISTRATIVE ARRANGEMENTS

Applications are now invited for the scholarships to be awarded in the academic year 2009/2010.
Applications should be submitted not later than 1 September 2008 to the Trustees, on forms obtainable from the Nominating Committee, The David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust, International Exchange Center, China University of Political Science and Law, 25 Xi Tu Cheng Road, Beijing, PC, 100088, PR China, or from The Trustees, The David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust, c/o Withers, 16 Old Bailey, London EC4M 7EG, England.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit, through the Nominating Committee, evidence of their capacity to undertake the course of study. A fluent command of the English language (both written and spoken) is absolutely essential. It is mandatory for the candidates to have either an acceptable TOEFL or IELTS qualification, i.e.

- TOEFL -
paper based: overall score of 600, with a Test of Written English score of 5.5 or
computer based: overall score of 250, with Test of Written English score of 5.5 or
internet based: overall score of 100

- IELTS -
overall score of 7.0 (with at least 7.0 in each of the four components)

Shortlisted candidates must apply separately for admission to the University. They must submit an application, identifying Oriel as their preferred College, to the Oxford Colleges Admissions Office by 20 September 2008. They must also apply via Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The scholarships will be awarded by the Trustees of the David and Jayne Paterson Educational Trust. The nominated candidates will be subject to acceptance by Oriel College. The Trustees will meet in November 2008 and expect to interview shortlisted candidates not later than 15 November 2008.

TIMETABLE

1 September 2008
Deadline for submission of application for The David and Jayne Paterson Scholarships.
20 September 2008
Deadline for submission of second undergraduate degree application forms and Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) forms to Oxford University.
October/November 2008
Shortlisted candidates are interviewed in Beijing by the Law Faculty overseas team. The published dates are expected to be in late October 2008.

Shortlisted candidates take the National Admission Test for Law (LNAT), assuming that it will be made available and required for overseas candidates in the 2008 round of admissions for 2009. For LNAT information, see http://www.lnat.ac.uk/
Mid-November 2008
Shortlisted candidates are interviewed in Beijing by the Trustees.
December 2008
Candidates succeeding in both their Paterson Scholarship and Oriel Admission applications will be informed at the same time in one notification that they have been awarded Paterson Scholarships and places at Oriel.
